Prepare soil

  1. Empty contents of plastic tube.  Cut out and tape the green paper stand, and place it on the tube.
  2. Open the packet of Crystal Clay and pour all the crystals into the tube.
  3. Add water to the crystals in the tube until the tube is approximately half full. Bottled spring water works best, but tap water can sometimes be substituted as long as it’s not soft water.
  4. After about an hour, the crystals will swell to the top of the water level.
  5. Add water as necessary to keep the level about ½ inch below the top of the crystals until they have completely stopped swelling.
  6. If there is excess water above the top of the crystals after waiting several hours, drain the excess water off.

Sow the seeds

  1. Add the packet of seeds on top of the crystals so that they are lying exposed, but damp, on top of the crystals. Do not bury the seeds, or allow them to be under water.  If the seeds fall below the water level, use a spoon handle to lift them above the water level. It is important that the seeds keep moist during the first couple of days, so check them each day.

Watch them grow

  1. Keep the tubes near a window sill, but out of direct sun or heat.
  2. Add water as needed to keep the water level ½ to 1 inch below the top of the crystals.  The first seeds should sprout in 2-4 days.
  3. As in nature, some of the seeds in your kit may not grow. Take out any seeds that have not sprouted after one week to avoid mold.
